At one of Jonas' last meetings with the Giver, the Giver tells Jonas about his last apprentice who was not spoken of. The last apprentice was the Giver's daughter who's name was Rosemary. She had gotten memory of loss and loneliness and after that she couldn't handle the sadness. Rosemary put in an order of release and all the sad memories were brought back to the Community.
One of the last things that happens in the book that make Jonas want to run away, is seeing his father release a baby. At Jonas' daily meeting with the Giver Jonas wonders about the private releases. Thinking about the news he had gotten at home that his father was releasing a baby, he mentions it to the Giver who shows him a clip during the release. Jonas sees his father inject a syringe into the infants head and watches silently as the baby goes from quietly whimpering to laying limp in his fathers arms. Seeing this adds to the many thing causing him to want to run away, so at night he takes Gabriel, crosses the river and starts the journey to Elsewhere.
The sadness of this story finally ends when Jonas and Gabriel are tired and weak ride down the hill on the sled. Jonas almost half asleep hears the faint sound of music.
