I chose the Black Box as one of the many symbols I had noted. The black box symbolizes fear. People in the village had fear for the Black Box, because they knew that if their name was picked, they could be killed. Also The Black Box symbolizes death, because if your name was picked by Mr. Summers, the villagers would throw stones at you, specifically towards your head trying to kill you. On line 27 it says "They stood together, away from the pile of stones in the corner, and their jokes were quiet and they smiled rather than laughed." This means that they are scared of the box because if they get picked, the stones will be thrown at them.
TONE & THEME
The very first sentence starts off with the setting. On line 1-2 page 25 it says "The morning was clear and sunny, with fresh warmth of a full-summer day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green." I used this to describe image, because the sentence is so detailed. If you were to close your eyes and someone read this to you, you could get a picture in your head about what is going on. This is one of the strongest images, you can picture in your head.
For figure of speech i chose tautology, because tautology means when you are saying the exact same thing in different words. On page 34 line 338 it says, "Its isn't fair, it isn't fair, it isn't right." When Mrs. Hutchinson says this she is afraid and is confused on why she is the one that is going to get hit by the stones. Old man Warner say "Come on< come on, everyone." Mrs. Hutchinson was talking to old man Warner, when saying this, because the villagers were trying to kill her. Tautology is a perfect way to describe the way Mrs. Hutchinson was talking, because she was saying the exact same thing with the same meaning.
The theme of The Lottery is: "Cruelty of human nature." In The Lottery there is a black box that has all the names of the villagers, and they draw a name every year. Who ever gets their name drawn is stoned to death, by the villagers. This is very cruel, and inhumane because they do this every year and show no mercy to the person who's name gets drawn out the box. This is there tradition and it isn't a very good tradition because they will keep killing innocent villagers, for no reason. At the end of the story Mrs. Hutchinson was stoned to death by the villagers.
