In 1800 a boy by the name of Horace Mann wanted to make education available to more kids. When he grew up in Massachusetts he went to school only 10 weeks a year. In that time wealthy people sent there kids to private school. 60 children might of attended a one room school.
In the 1820's in cities were there is a lot of poverty kids would steal and sett things on fire . Reformers thought that they need a good education to escape these habits. So in New York they sat up a public elementary school in every town.

In 1834 Prudence Crandall was forced to close her school because she admitted a black girl to her school.

In 1837 Oberlin Collage in Ohio became the first collage to admit woman as well as men.

By the 1850's most states in the north and west used Mann's ideas. Soon most white children, especially boys, attended free public school. But still states did not offer public education to everyone.
When states first opened there public collages most accepted female students. But for African Americans they had few choices. When he became president of a collage in Ohio he urged the students to become involved in improving society.
