Storyboard Text

  • The Role of Morality and Motivation in To Kill a Mockingbird
  •  Atticus shows multiple times in the novel why he is taking Tom Robinson's case. He explains that it is his job as a father to set a good example for his children.
  • This novel takes place during the Great Depression. Back then, it was normal to treat black people like they were trash. Atticus turned against society and treated everyone who deserved to be treated with respect, equally.
  • In To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee shows Atticus's motivation to prove Tom's innocence for the sake of his own morals by teaching his kids, society, and the town of Maycomb to do what is right.
  • In the town of Maycomb, it seems as though everyone knows what the right thing is. They just can't get themselves to actually do it.
  • "As you grow older, you see white men cheat black men everyday of your life, but let me tell you something, and don't you forget it. Whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash" (Lee 295).
  • Personal Connection
  • "Shoot all the blue jays you want, if you can hit them."-Atticus, "Your fathers right... mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy." - Miss Maudie (Lee 119).
  • "I'm not a very good man, sir, but I am sheriff of Maycomb County. Lived in this town all my life an' I'm goin' on forty-three years old. Know everything that's happened here since before I was born. There's a black boy dead for no reason, and the man responsible for it is dead. Let the dead bury the dead this time, Mr. Finch. Let the dead bury the dead" (Lee 369).
  • Church teaches me to do the right thing. And teaches me good morals.
