In this scene, Lizabeth is listening to her parents conversation about being in poverty. She sees her father in a state she has never seen him before ; weak. As they are talking she is in the struggle of deciding whether she is a child or an adult.
In this scene, Lizabeth is struggling to find her identity so she gets out of bed in the early morning and she picks and destroys the Marigold flower bed while weeping. She knows she is an adult now and this was her last childish act. Lizabeth feels so ashamed and is very sorry for Miss Lottie.
