In the beginning of Night , Eliezer, his father, and the rest of his family is introduced. Eliezer is a 13 year old Jewish boy living in Sighet, Transylvania in the early 1940's. He is devoted to his religious faith and even has a spiritual mentor, Moishe the Beadle. Adolf Hitler has began to lead his army, and to annihilate the Jewish population, but the people of Sighet do not believe the Germans will ever reach them.
Around 2 years later, the Germans make their way towards Sighet. They treat the people with kindness and compassion, and the people believe there is nothing to worry about. But quickly soon, the German officers become more hostile, and establish ghettos for the Jewish people to undergo constrained living.
The German officers, now being extremely hostile, force all of the Jewish citizens to walk for miles until they reach a small train, in which they are all tightly packed. They try to all remain positive, but the hysteria gets to them, resulting in people beating an old lady for crying and screaming from fear. The train travels for hours on end with the hysteria getting worse and worse, until they all arrive at the German Concentration Camp, Auschwitz.
When Eliezer arrives at Auschwitz, he is deprived of his very own personal belongings and given a tattoo for identification. He lies about his age, and is sent to a labor camp. But Eliezer witnesses the horror known as Auschwitz unravel before his very own eyes soon. He sees innocent lives of both young to old being tossed into a crematory, soldiers beating and killing the innocent. In these few moments of absolute horror and despair, Eliezer loses his faith in God and humanity.
After months of being at multiple camps, Eliezer and his father are ordered to go onto a train to send them to a new camp. There are 100 living souls who are dying from starvation and fatigue. Eliezers father is on the brink of death, but Eliezer keeps him alive. At one point, a random German citizen throws a loaf of bread into the cart and watches the prisoners become savages and kill one another for a piece. At the end of the train ride, there are only 12 living people, including Eliezer and his father.
Soon after Eliezer and his father reach a new camp, his father becomes too weak and ill to carry on. He is sent to the camps hospital where he becomes delusional, and begs Eliezer to give him water. A guard beats him in the head, and he begs out Eliezers name. The next day, Eliezer discovers his father has been sent to the crematorium and has died. 4 months later, the camp is raided by US armies and Eliezer is liberated. When he finally goes to look at his reflection, he says he only sees a corpse.
