  • Nutrition is the science of food and how the body uses the foods taken in.
  • So there are 6 groups of nutrients needed for growth and maintenance of health. These are proteins, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water.
  • So what are nurtients? 
  • You see, energy from food supports the body processes, such as breathing and blood circulation. 
  • Nutrients are the chemical substances in food that help build and maintain the body.
  • So nutrients are needed to build a strong boday and mind? 
  • Hmmm.... interesting! 
  • So food provides the body with energy.?
  • Right! Each food has its own energy value.  This value is measured in calories. Lets ask the professor! 
  • The amount of calories a person needs depends on age and activity level. Children need more energy than adults.
  • Active 4 year old boy weighing 42 pounds needs 1,600 calories per day. 
  • A some what active 42 year old man  weighing at 160 lbs needs 2,600 calories per day.
