That's because the rectangle is 2D so I put a 2 but if it were 3D I would put a 3

Sure, look at this chalkboard. If I wanted to paint the inside another color other than black, I would need to know the area.
The blue one is the base which is 6 and the red one is the height which is 8. Now I have to multiply them.

6x8=48 The area of this rectangle is 48cm2.
