  • "She had no clothes, no jewels, nothing. And these were the only things she loved; she felt that she was made for them" (Maupassant 1).
  • Mathilde Loisel, a middle classed clerk, has always had dreams of a wealthier lifestyle. Mathilde lives unhappily alongside her husband who is also a clerk.
  • ""And what do you suppose I am to wear at such an affair" (Maupassant 2).
  • One day after work, Mathilde was greeted be her excited husband. He explained how they had gotten invited to a upper class party, where she can finally live out her dream. Unlike expected, Mathilde was angry and upset because she didn't have anything to wear that wouldn't make her look out of place at the party.
  • Mathilde's husband generously gave his wife four thousand francs to buy a nice dress for the occasion. Then Mathilde went to a friends house to borrow a necklace to complete the look.
  • "Yes. Look for yourself. I don't know what you would like best" (Maupassant 6).
  • The day was finally there. Mathilde was the most beautiful one there with her gorgeous dress and stunning necklace. She was very happy.
  • "She danced madly, ecstatically, drunk with pleasure" (Maupassant 6).
  • Mathilde got home around 4 o clock in the morning. She was over joyed about her night last night! Then she realized the necklace was gone! She searched high and low and decided to retrace her steps.
  • "I . . . I . . . I've no longer got Madame Forestier's necklace" (Maupassant 7).
  • 10 years of extremely hard, long, tiring hours of work to pay off the necklace. Mathilde and her husband were now old. They finally reached the amount of money needed to pay her friend back. They returned the money, only to find out the necklace she wore that night was a fake and only a quarter of the amount they had worked for!
  • "She washed the plates, wearing out her pink nails on the coarse pottery and the bottoms of pans" (Maupassant 9).
