  • A flaw that leads to his downfall is his overconfidence and his curiosity. He feels that he needs to know being king who the baby is by egging on the herdsman which leads to finding out his fate and leads to his downfall.
  • Anagnorisis
  • Oedipus finds himself with excessive pride when interacting with Creon. Because he is the king he feels that he is being targeted because of who he is. He pride shows his defiance and self shielding of his past.
  • Nemesis
  • The reversal of fortune is when the messenger comes from Corinth. Oedipus was left on mount Cithaeron to die but the messenger saves him instead.
  • Catharsis
  • Oedipus makes the critical discovery when he realizes who the baby is. When he realizes that it is him, he now knows his past and future.
  • The fate that cannot be avoided is that Oedipus is the son of Laius and Jocasta. This is a big part of the prophecy which he happened to be part of. Once he was in, there was no going back.
  • The audience feels bad things can happen to anyone, including Oedipus. It was unfortunate that it had to happen to a person like him especially where he was at in royalty.
