Before life, before anything, there was nothing. except for two gods who had somehow appeared into existence.
Their names were: Papatuanuku: God of the sky and Ranginui: Goddess of earth After a while they became more affectionate to one another, and finally fell in love. They even had 70 children!
With the parents tightly bonded, the children were stuck between the two gods in the darkness. Because of this all the children apart from Tāwhirimātea (God of winds) decided to divide the parents so that they may finally be free and feel the sun and cool breeze.
The boys all banded together by using their combined strength to push the two gods apart.
In the end they were successful, they finally got to see the sun. But sadly it was at the expense of their parents.
Angered by what his brothers had done, Tawhirimatea sent many storms, hurricanes and tornadoes to the animals and humans of the land. Luckily Ranginui would be able to calm him down and tell him to just accept what had happened that day. Ranginui and Papatuanuku still yearn for each other to this day.
