Every year we win Outstanding Delegation, lets keep it going!
The Phantom Menace is the best Star Wars movie!!
Its really not
Dr.Evil, Lex Luther, Skeletor, Thanos, the evidence speaks for itself...
I had just joined our Chico State Model United Nations Class in hopes of making the final team and expectations were sky high considering the team had been winning national competitions for five straight years
The State of Qatar moves for a roll call vote
I had no experience in debate so I didn't think I would make the team, I worked with a friend of mine named Evan who had been on the team last semester. We would debate topic points for hours on end, our friendship was definitely tested.
How do you pronounce Qatar again?!
Oh yeah, I feel prepared
Lunch was supposed to be an hour ago
Finally it was time to try out, each student was given a random point to debate for 10 mins straight on stage in front of the class with no prep. I was given "All bald people are Evil"
Welcome to Mr. Norton's 11th Grade US History!
Whoo hoo, stools instead of chairs!
Evan and I both made the team and the real work began. The 12 people on the team had to work together for two hours each day plus all day Saturday for three months. Finally it was time for the National Model United Nations conference in New York where we would be representing the State of Qatar.
Our first few days in New York, no one left their rooms, we had to write postion papers that explained in excruciating detail exactly what our goals were for our committee and our country. Evan and I were partners in the General Assembly
After a week of debate and policy writing we gave our final statements in the United Nations headquarters of the General Assembly. We even took home Outstanding Delegation! It was on this trip that I realized I wanted to teach Political Science and hopefully encourage my students to participate in fun collaborative activities like this one that take them out of the classroom and exposes them to new people and ideas.
