  • They started using sign language, which would come to be known as Martha's Vineyard Sign Language(MVSL).
  • HAT
  • A man named Thomas Gallaudet met his neighbor's deaf daughter. He immediately wanted to learn how to teach her.
  • Gallaudet taught Alice the word "Hat" by pointing to his hat and writing it into the ground.
  • Then, he traveled to France, where he met Laurent Clerc, a deaf teacher.
  • Gallaudet traveled to England and was denied information about their sign language methods.
  • Gallaudet convinced Clerc to travel back to America with him.
  • On their journey, Clerc taught Gallaudet French Sign Language and Gallaudet taught Clerc english.
  • When Laurent was a baby, he fell out of his chair and into the fireplace, making him deaf.
  • He scarred the right side of his face, earning him his name sign.
