Okonkwo is the son of a poor man named Unoka. Okonkwo wishes to be nothing like his father so he works extremely hard. He has two barns of yams and three wives. Okonkwo is a very important man in their clan.
Okonkwo was given a young boy named Ikemefuna to watch over. He grows up to be something like a son to Okonkwo. His clan tells the boy that he will be returning home. They take him on a journey to kill him. Okonkwo is the one to finish him off.
The town gathered for a funeral of a very important man named Ezeudu. At the funeral men beat drums and fire their guns. Okonkwo's gun went off and accidently killed Ezeudu's sixteen-year-old son. Okonkwo and his family were exiled for seven years.
