"Members of the jury: Do each of you swear by Almighty God that you will try the case before you to the best of your ability and give your verdict according to the evidence?"
A New Zealand juror's oath
Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, I am here today to prove that my client, George Foyet, was criminally insane at the time of the murder.
Gentlemen, please present your opening statements.
On the other hand, I am here to prove that Mr. Foyet was well aware of his actions when murdering Dr. Spencer Reid.
Prosecution. Please present your evidence.
Your honor, I would like to call my witness to the stand.
Sir, can you please explain what you saw on the afternoon of January 22?
Thank you Mr. Hotchner. Your honor, the murder weapons with the suspect's prints on it was found at the scene of the crime. I rest my case.
Yes, while going back to my hotel I turned to see Mr. Foyet with the knife in his hand kneeling over the victim, he then proceeded to stab the victim multiple times. He seemed fully aware of what he was doing.
Defence. Present your evidence.
My client was not conscious at the time of the crime. He had recently bought new medication for a brain tumor and had just started using it that day, however it unintentionally affected his mindset and therefore had no idea ehat he was doing
In conclusion, my client cannot be responsible for his actions at the time of the crime and had no criminal intent.
Closing remarks gentlemen.
On the contrary, Mr. Foyet has plenty of evidence against him and a witness who testifies that Mr. Foyet was entirely competent at the time of the murder.
Jury. You have heard the case and all evidence relating to it. You have also received instructions on the law. Please retire to the jury room to make your decision.
