In France 1880 a lady named Mathilde Loisel wanted a better life. SHe wanted to go to fabulous parties with expensive dresses. She wanted a rich husband but she couldn't have that. She was a middle class lady that came from a family of clerks.
One day Monsieur Loisel her husband comes home with invitations to a party. Madame Loisel didn't want to go because she believed she would look poor in her old dress.
Monsieur Loisel felt bad for his wife so he decided that he would give his wife the money he was saving. Madame Loisel buys a new dress with her husband's money. Later that day she goes to her friend's house to borrow a necklace to make her outfit better.
Madame Loisel went to the ball and had a wonderful time. When the Loisel's get home Madame Loisel noticed that she was missing her friend's diamond necklace.
Mathilde didn't want to go tell her friend's house and tell her the truth. Instead they decided to get her the same necklace. They found a necklace similar to the one they lost.
For ten years Mathilde's husband had to work and get loans to buy the necklace. They lost their house and moved in into someones attic. Mathilde gives the diamond necklace back to her friend. Then she meets her friend telling her the whole truth. It was later reviled that the necklace that was lost was a fake one.
