When Siddartha was born, his father met some sages. They told the king, that Siddartha would either become the ruler of India, or a holy man, if he was exposed to any suffering!
OH NO. I MUST PROTECT HIM FROM ALL SUFFERING!!!!!!!!
Daddy, please can I go outside, I have never been outside!
NO YOU CAN NOT GO OUTSIDE!
Siddartha's father would not let him go outside in case that he saw suffering
When he went out one day, he saw suffering, and a holy man, and decided he needed to become a holy man, as well.
When he realised that extreme ascetism was not the way, he sat under a tree for 49 days, while his companions abandoned him, because they thought he was betraying the holy path.
We are going to abandon you for this foolishness!
At the end of the 49 days he reached enlightenment, and became the Buddah, and realised that self-mortification and extreme indulgence, were both wrong, and that you had to follow the middle way or eightfold path
Lord Buddha, please accept us to be your disciples!
Don't cry, I accept!
For a while he decided if humans were too arrogant and greedy to teach, but after some convincing, he went around Asia, gaining disciples and forming a large sangha: a group of monks.
