Millions of people lost their jobs and unemployment rates soared up to 25% as companies couldn’t afford to pay wages. Even young and able-bodied men were unable to find work and resorted to criminal habits to survive.
Once Roosevelt took office, he implemented the New Deal, which included the CCC. This program employed over 3 million young men to restore public spaces, such as parks. The program lasted for 9 years.
We still see the long-lasting effects of the CCC and their public works. They helped build new trails and remodel over 800 parks, many of which are still open to the public today.
