Storyboard Text

  • The Cherokee Indian Creation Myth
  • In the beginning, there was nothing but water and darkness. All the animals were suspended in Galúnlati, a place above the stone vault of a sky.
  • The animals, not knowing what was below the water, sent down the water beetle. He came back from the depths of the water with some mud. The mud eventually grew into an 'island', which we call earth.
  • Since the land was created from mud, the ground was extremely soft. For this reason, only the birds went down to earth. When the buzzard went down, he got so tired that he crashed. His skid marks from his wings created the Cherokee valley and mountains.
  • All animals are sacred too us. We do eat all types of meat, but we have to offer a prayer to the animals before we kill them. Also, all animals have spirits.
  • After the land became sustainable, humans started to arrive. At first, the humans population grew rapidly. The first woman could have a baby every 7 days.
  • From the children born came Kanáti and Selu. They married and had a little boy. The boy would play down by the river. He started to play with a boy who had arisen from the blood from the game. They adopted the river boy into the family. Kanáti had the ability to hunt any game, whilst Selu could create corn from nothing. One day, the children saw both these events take place, and that meant that the parents died. Selu then told them to drag her body around a circle 7 times in front of their house, and then to pull her 7 times over the soil inside the circle, and if they stayed up all night to watch, in the morning they would have a fresh crop of corn. The boys, though, only cleared a few spots and they only dragged her body over it twice, which is why corn only grows in certain places on the earth. They did sit up all night, though, and in the morning the corn was grown, and still it is grown today, although now it takes half a year.
