St. Ignatius was sent to serve as a page at the age of sixteen to Juan Velazquez the treasurer of the kingdom of Castile. During this time Ignatius spent a-lot of time at court. At court Ignatius was attracted to women, addicted to gambling and occasional swordplay. He and other family members had committed a-lot of crime and had to flee town.
On 21 May, 1521 Ignatius's leg was struck by a canon ball severely injuring him. Ignatius was fighting against the French in the battle of Pamplona the Spanish were about to surrender but their captain Ignatius refused to. While the Spanish were about to receive reinforcements from Ignatius's brother Martin, Martin he refused to waist his men on the war. When his leg was struck the French leader aided him for his bravery. Because he couldn't go anywhere he started to read books about christ and started to trust in Jesus's faith.
In 1522 Ignatius decided to leave his home and die in the Holy Land in Jerusalem but his request was denied so he went to Rome to go see the pope to see if they could do anything to help. Ignatius's group were happy to help but the Pope's requests would spread them all over the world Ignatius was worried they may not be reunited. They saw a abandoned house Ignatius went in he found the sign of the cross and from there he decided to die in Rome.
