  • Oedipus' flaw that causes his downfall is rash judgement. In this scene, Oedipus is in denial of Teiresias' knowledge of Oedipus' past. He thinks that Teiresias is lying.
  • ANAGNORISIS The moment when the hero makes a critical discovery
  • Oedipus shows excessive pride in the beginning of the story. In this scene, he goes the Thebes to talk to the chorus and tells them that their king came to save them.
  • NEMESIS A fate that cannot be avoided
  • Oedipus has a reversal of fortune when he returns to Thebes and sees Creon as the king. In this scene, Oedipus talks to Creon after he knows his fate.
  • CATHARSIS The feeling of pity or fear the audience experiences after the hero's fall
  • Please take care of my daughters.
  • Oedipus makes a critical discovery about his past when the Messenger tells him that Jocasta is his mother. In this scene, Jocasta owns up to the fact that she is Oedipus' mother and Oedipus now understands that he killed Laius.

  • Oedipus' fate could not be avoided. In this scene, Oedipus tells Creon that he wants to be sent to Mount Cithaeron so he can finish the prophecy.

  • The audience feels pity for Oedipus because he couldn't avoid his terrible fate. In this scene, Oedipus is making his three last requests before he dies. One of these requests is that Creon takes care of Oedipus' young daughters.
