- Hello, Mr. Farmer. How are you today?
- Hello, kiddo. I'm doing just fine here in the farm. Do you need anything?
- Yes, Mr. Farmer, I do need something. Our agri teacher gave a task about the importance of irrigation in the rice field, but I do not knowing anything about it. Can you help me?
- I would gladly help you with that. What is the importance of irrigation in the rice field you say? Let me tell you somethings about that.
- Do you see the field behind me? This is a big land where we plant rice crops, of course other kind of vegetables too. But how do we, farmer, water the crops here? We use this thing called "irrigation"
- In short, we use irrigation in order to water each crops easily and quickly. We have many kinds of irrigations. You can look that up in the internet, but I'll give to kind of irrigation.
- Irrigation helps to grow agricultural crops, maintain landscapes, and revegetate disturbed soils in dry areas and during periods of less than average rainfall.
- This is one type of irrigation called Terraced Irrigation. You'll see this type of irrigation on some upland fields like the Banaue Rice Terraces in Ifugao.
- Terrace irrigation is an ancient agriculture practice that still exists today, generally in mountainous regions. A series of steps are cut into the sloped land so that when it rains, the water flows down from the top step down to the succeeding steps retaining the soil nutrients as it goes.
- You mean, this irrigation need the rain in order for it to be filled?
- Yes. But if you have the budget to buy a water pump, you can use that too especially on summer time.
