Ponyboy, Soda, and Darry see each other for the first time since Johnny murdered the Soc a week ago. They talk to the doctors about how Johnny and Dally are doing. Johnny broke his back and will be crippled for the rest of his life if he survives and Dally will be okay with just a few burns.
Two-Bit Matthews and Ponyboy go to visit Johnny and Dally in the hospital. Johnny is not well and asks for Two-Bit to get him a copy of Gone With The Wind. Dally is getting better but still needs to stay in the hospital. On the way there Ponyboy talks to Randy, the other Soc that was there when Bob was murdered to tell Ponyboy that he won't be participating in the big rumble between the Socs and Greasers.
After the big rumble between the Socs and the Greasers, Dally and Johnny rush to the hospital to see Johnny who is dying. He gives Ponyboy his copy of Gone With The Wind His last words were to Ponyboy, "Stay Gold Ponyboy, Stay Gold."
Ponyboy returns home to all of the Greasers in his living room after the rumble. He tells them that Dally had "broken down". Dally calls and says he's being chased by police after he robbed a grocery store. When they go outside they see Dally pull out an unloaded gun on police! The police shoot him and he is dead before he hits the ground. Ponyboy passes out from a concussion he received from the rumble.
Ponyboy is recovering from the concussion that he recived from the rumble. He does not believe that Johnny and Dally are dead. Randy comes to see how he is doing. Randy tells him that he can't get into any trouble with the law since it was not him who killed Bob. Ponyboy thinks HE killed Bob and also thinks Johnny is still alive. Darry tells Randy to leave.
Ponyboys grades are dropping and is constantly getting into fights with Darry after the death of Johnny and Dally and his concussion. He is also failing English so his teacher makes him write an essay so he will get a C grade. Ponyboy and Darry get into a fight and Soda runs away. They promise not to fight and listing to each other. Ponyboy picks up the copy of Gone With The Wind and a note falls out. It tells him to show Dally a sunset but its too late. He writes his English assignment on Johnny, Dally, and his life as a Greaser.
