Storyboard Text

  • One day, I found an old diary in surprise at home. It belonged to my great-great-great-great grandfather, Cooper, who was a Loyalist.
  • This was a part of his diary. September 26th, 1780
  • I am a merchant in New York city. My business import many products from Europe, especially Britain.
  • Today, I saw some Patriots carrying a victim who endured a punishment called being "tarred and feathered" around the town so that
  • ... everyone could see what happened to people who were loyal to Britain.
  • I am afraid that the same experience will happen to my family, so I have no choice but to leave the Thirteen Colonies.
  • September 27th, 1780
  • Although I am able to continue my business, I and my family still have many hardships to endure.
  • We give up everything and go to the British Colony of Quebec which can provide protection from the Patriots. The government gives us enough supplies to last for three years.
  • October 24th, 1780
  • We use stones for fireplaces. Our tents have no floors but the ground... How we will live through the winter, I barely know.
  • Winter is coming. Many of us have to live in tents during the first winter. We pitch our tents in the shelter of the woods and try to cover them with spruce boughs.
  • November 5th, 1780
