Nick Carraway has just moved into his new home in West Egg, a district of Long Island. He moved here from Minnesota after he returns from fighting in the war to learn the trade of a bondsman. He reflects on his past as he settles into his house.
Tom's got a woman in New York...
Nick travels over to East Egg to meet with his second cousin once removed, Daisy, and her wealthy husband Tom Buchanan. Nick and Tom talk with each other and Tom shows Nick around the property. Tom is very arrogant and has a supercilious manner.
Nick is brought inside and is introduced to a professional golfer and friend of Daisy, Jordan Baker, and talks with Tom, Jordan, and Daisy. Daisy is very happy to see Nick. They make small talk about what Nick is up to, and Daisy and Tom's daughter.
They sit outside to prepare for dinner, however when Tom is called inside by the butler, he leaves to answer it and Dasiy excuses herself. Jordan takes this opportunity to inform Nick about Tom's women that he has in New York and how Daisy knows about it.
They all return together and continue to chat about useless things. Jordan decides to excuse herself and go to bed. Then Nick asks about Jordan's past, and Daisy explains. Nick then decides to go home. Before he leaves Daisy asks about a rumor that he is engaged to someone back west, and Nick denies the rumor and leaves.
As Nick is driving home, he relfects on all the new information he has heard during dinner, and considers contacting Gatsby. However, as he arrives home he sees Gatsby standing on his dock. Nick doesn't call out to Gatsby, but insteed watches him gaze longingly at a green light across the water. But, when Nick looks back once more for Gatsby, he finds that Gatsby has vanished.
