Simon is first introduced to Ralph and Piggy when the group of choir boys approaches the gathered assembly. Simon is portrayed as the outsider of the group when he collapses due to heat exhaustion in front of the boys, which irritates Jack.
"All the same. You'll get back alright. I think so, anyway."
"Got a ship in your pocket?"
The boys, Ralph, Piggy, and Simon, spot a ship off in the horizon, but Ralph realizes the fire is out. Simon tries to reach out and touch Ralph's shoulder, but Ralph immediately starts running toward where the fire should be.
Simon sneaks away from the group to go to his place in the forest so he can be alone. He squats down in the center of the thicket and sits among the leaves.
"That was Simon."
Simon sees Ralph sitting and staring at the water. Simon approaches him and reassures Ralph that he will get home alright. Simon is trying to make sure Ralph does not give up hope of being rescued.
“No, I’m not. I just you’ll get back all right.”
Simon, while searching through the forest after Jack and a few others abandon the original group, encounters the pig's head on the steak. Simon hallucinates, and hears the pig, which his mind names "The Lord of the Flies", speaking to him.
The night after the "dance", Ralph realizes what they did the night before. Ralph expresses how he feels guilty about taking part in Simon's murder. Piggy tries to tell him it wasn't their fault because they were scared and it was dark.
