Lord of the Flies characterization of Simon,Jack, Ralph, and Piggy.

Storyboard Text

  • "Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with shy liking" (23).
  • The characters shown here are Simon, Jack, Ralph, and Piggy. They have just arrived on the island and have not quarreled.
  • Ralph is described to have an athletic build, and he glows with charisma. He is appealing to the eye with his broad shoulders and friendliness. The boys made him chief with this in mind.

  • "'Who wants me?' Every hand outside the choir except Piggy's was raised immediately. Then Piggy, too, raised his hand grudgingly into the air. Ralph counted. 'I'm chief then'" (22).
  • Piggy is representation of knowledge; he knows what to do when the group is stuck in a difficult situation. However, they all take his for granted since they make fun of him. When Piggy is killed, Ralph realized how much he needed his knowledge.
  • “Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?”(180).

  • Simon represents religion in a sense of being a Godlike figure to the group, and he is somewhat similar to a prophet. He is a generous person who is able to remain good in a place of savagery. Unfortunately, goodness and wildness do not usually work together, ending in Simon's death.

  • “You'll get back to where you came from”(111).
  • Jack is a power-hungry type of leader. He dislikes not being in charge when Ralph is elected as chief, and he eventually went off on his own while taking some boys too. He was a very dynamic character with his change from civilized to savagery. He is the reason behind the deaths of Simon and Piggy.
  • " He's not a hunter. He'd never have got us meat. He isn't a perfect and we don't know anything about him. He just gives orders and expects people to obey for nothing. All this talk-" (126).
  • The arrival of the naval officer has answered Ralph's wish of being rescued. However, They were rescued because the officer saw the fire that was supposed to kill Ralph instead of rescuing him. The boys who lived have been brought back to reality and realized how the savagery of the island has changed them to the point in which two people have been killed, and they can never go home.
