  • There was a Republic. It was known as the Roman Republic. There were many reasons why this Republic fell. Those reasons include: conflicts in the 1st and 2nd Triumvirates as well as the political changes that were made. This is the story of how the Roman Republic fell.

  • There were 2 brothers named Tiberius and Gaius Gracchus, also known as the Gracchi brothers. These brothers believed in the good of the people and because of that, they had lots of popular and political support. 
  • Marius and Sulla: The story of Marius.
  • However, although the Gracchi Brothers helped the people by doing things such as having the state pay for military equipment or making those who owned over 500 acres of land donate the extra land to the poor and homeless, they were not able to maintain complete political support.

  • As the Gracchi no longer had any support from the people, they were killed at the hands of some of the Roman senators.

  • There were two men that ruled Rome after the Gracchi. These two men, like every other emperor wanted to make a difference. These two, wanted a difference in the politics of the Republic.  The first was Marius. He was elected the Plebian consul for the second time in his life and the senate was not happy about it.

  • During his rule and in an effort to have a larger army, Marius paid the soldiers and if they survived the wars, they would also receive land to live on once they returned home to Rome.
