Hi I am Dorothea Dix. I will be your teacher at Sunday School.
I cannot believe that prisoners are locked in chains like wild animals. This needs to end.
Sir, this is unfair, even for the prisoners. They can't even earn money to pay their debts back.
They're criminals, they don't deserve to live a happy life if they put people in danger.
These people are human, too. Allow them to make money like any other human.
Then I will protest until it's fair for everyone.
That's fair enough. They'll all be on my side.
I promise that I will help everyone out. The debtors, mentally ill, everyone, because everyone is a human being.
I am the narrator. By the time Dorothea Dix died in 1887, state governments no longer put debtors in prison.
