Takes place in San Francisco Chinatown, the narrator is little girl named Waverly and she has an older brother named Vincent. Her mother tries to teach her invisible strength.
Waverly wants to be more independent and do things without her mother telling her what to do with everything she does.
Vincent wins a chess game as a prize during a Christmas event. He starts to teach Waverly how to play the game and she becomes good at doing so.
Waverly's family was in town and she was watching people play chess so she goes back to her apartment to get the game of chess to play with an old man. She start to become famous in her town for playing chess and wining.
As Waverly gets popular for her chess skills her mom wants to show her off to everyone in town and it embarrasses her because she wants to be more independent and not have her mother use he for popularity or so people know her as just her being good at chess. They get in a fight and Waverly runs away.
Waverly returns home and goes to her bedroom and lays down thinking about how her mom now thinks/believes that Waverly doesn't want any help or that she doesn't want her mother to be "concerned" about her.
