Storyboard Text

  • A long time ago there was a power struggle against the kings and popes since they both wanted power. Both the popes and kings already had a great amount of power.
  • I have spiritual power! I should choose the bishop!
  • Well I have political power! So it is  I who shall choose religious officials.
  • And so a fight for authority began between the popes and kings.
  • In 1073 a new pope came into power. His name was Pope Gregory VII. During that time the Holy Roman emperor, Emperor Henry IV ruled.
  • I don't like the bishop you chose.
  • How dare you question my authority!
  • When Gregory disagreed over the bishop that Henry chose trouble arose.
  • The king got angry and requested that Gregory should be removed as a pope. When the pope found out what the emperor planned to do he excommunicated Henry.
  • I ban you from my church! Now leave at once!
  • Henry didn’t want to lose his power so he traveled to Italy to ask the pope for forgiveness. He lasted 3 days in the snow outside where Gregory was staying.
  • Please forgive me!
  • No! Now leave and stop bothering me!
  • Eventually the pope accepted his apologies.
  • Fine. I forgive you.
  • Even after they both died kings and popes continued to fight for power.
  • But this promise didn’t completely help stop all the fighting between the popes and kings since they still continued to fight for authority throughout Europe.
  • In the end a new emperor and a new pope reached a compromise. They decided that church officials would choose all bishops and abbots. However the bishops and abbots would still have to obey the emperor.
  • Deal!!!
