Storyboard Text

  • Today, we are learning about the mission of Apollo 11. This national goal was set by John F. Kennedy and the point was to have a spacecraft land on the moon and travel safely back to the Earth.
  • "And who might the crew members be?", you might ask.
  • Apollo launched on July 16, 1969, from Cape Kennedy.
  • The flight to the moon was approx. 109 hours and 42 minutes. (About 4 1/2 days).
  • On July 19, 1969, Apollo 11 had offically flown behind the moon, and the crew lost contact with Earth.
  • Neil Armstrong, Edwin (Buzz) Aldrin, and Michael Collins were all part of the Apollo 11 crew.
  • Fun fact: The crew was 5 hours ahead of schedule!
  • Neil and Buzz were the first men the land and walk on the Moon. They spent 21 hours and 36 minutes on the moon gathering samples before returning to Earth.
  • Apollo 11 landed on the Moon at 3:17 pm EST.
  • After a flight of 195 hours, 18 minutes, 35 seconds - about 36 minutes longer than planned- Apollo 11 crashed into the Pacific Ocean, 13 miles from the recovery ship USS Hornet.
  • Talk about a long flight back!
  • They landed on Earth on July 24, 1969; 12:56 pm EST.
  • Do you wonder "why" Apollo landed 36 minutes later than planned?
  • Since there was bad weather in the target area, the landing point was changed by about 250 miles-
  • - 13 degrees, 19 minutes north latitude and 169 degrees, nine minutes west longitude
  • Just a quick joke to make your day (and thank you for listening!)
  • What do you get in black socks? Black holes.
