Before Romeo ever meant Juliet, before the greatest tragedy, there was a girl named Rosaline who held the heart of our dear Romeo in her hands.
Present Time: Benvolio asks Romeo why he is so sad.
But to the despair of poor Romeo, Rosaline had no interest in him or in any man. For she had sworn that she will always live chaste.
Present Time: Benvolio is determined to find Romeo someone else.
Rosaline left him, alone, dejected, and heart-broken. How could Romeo possibly forget this beautiful, smart, stubborn girl whom he loved desperately.
Present Time: Romeo and Benvolio hear about the Capulet's ball and head there in hopes to find a girl.
Benvolio: Tell me in sadness, who is that you love? Romeo: She'll not be hit with Cupid's arrow...She hath forsworn to love, and in that vow do I live dead that live to tell it now...Oh teach me how I should forget to think!
Benvolio: By giving liberty unto thine eyes. Examine other beauties. Romeo: He that is strucken blind cannot forget the precious of his eyesight lost. Thou canst not teach me to forget. Benvolio: I'll pay that doctrine, or else die in debt
And so, Benvolio and Romeo soon make plans to attend the Capulet's ball to find Romeo a girl. Romeo doubts this plan, for who could ever be more lovely than Rosaline...
