Willa Dean or Dumpli'n as her mother called her, grew up by her aunts side because her mother was too busy with pageants. Every day, her aunt would pick her up from school and they would listen to Dolly Parton songs on the ride home.
A couple of years pass and Dumpli'ns aunt has passed away. The only way she can feel close to her aunt is listening to Dolly's songs with her best friend Ellen.
Later in the book, she meets Bo and just like any other teenage girl, she falls in love with him.
Dumpli'n decides to try out for a pageant to show that even though she isn't what society would call pretty, she can still win.
Dumpli'n loses her self confidence and is reminded of her aunt. So Ellen takes her to the closest thing to Dolly Parton, a Dolly Parton drag show.
On the day of the pageant, Dumpli'n gives it her all and wins the pageant for her aunt, with the help of her friends and family.
