Through both terms of his presidency, Jefferson had faced many challenges. one being the Barbary pirates. the Barbary pirates are bands of maurderers sent from north africa that would intercept between America's trade and abduct the crew.
freedom at last
the first abduction was the ship Maria off of Portugal. they released the captain and its crew by holding them in rat-infested cells for 12 years. due to the rats six prisoners had died of the bubonic plauge
when Jefferson became president
because of how threatening the pirates are the French and English tried their hardest to avoid contact with them. england and France paid a daily sum to the pirates so they wouldn't abduct their citizens or intercept with their trade
The 7 week raid
after paying a ransom of 1 million dollars, the pirates had finally agreed to releasing all the hostages . to prevent this from ever happening again america continiued to pay the north african state's money.
Once Jefferson had become president he refused to pay the money to the pirates. the result of this was the ruler of Tripoli ordered a ship to be captured and the American flag to be removed from their country. in response Jefferson had military ships blockade the Barbary state of Tripoli. but the blocade was not succesfull resulting in the capture of 307 people.
Many people of all races became enraged resulting in a 7-week long march from Egypt called Eaton's raid. the raid ended the tripoli city of derna. the united states forced tripoli to sign a peace treaty resulting in the release of 300 people after paying the ransom of 60,000 dollars.
