Alyss, Jenny, Horace, Will, and George are all fifteen year old orphans about to be selected into a permanent trade by the Craftmasters and Baron Arald. None of the Craftmasters wanted Will, but the ranger Halt stepped in "and handed the Baron a sheet of paper," (Flanagan 30). The Baron read it and decided to tell Will his fate in the morning
Will was extremely curious about the note and after thinking it over, he decided to climb the tower and find out what it said. "Quickly, easily, he began to swarm up the wall" (Flanagan 36). Will knew this tower would not be hard to climb because he had climbed all of the other towers.
Will crept inside and was about to grab the piece of paper when "a hand shot out of nowhere and seized him by the wrist" (Flanagan 37). Halt was waiting in the shadows for Will, knowing he would try to get the note. Halt escorted Will to the Baron's quarters in which the Baron was waiting. The Baron and Halt decided to show Will the paper he was so keen to see. On it was written "The boy Will has the potential to be trained as a Ranger. I accept him as my apprentice" (Flanagan 41).
