  • 90% of the southern states voted for the Kansas-Nebraska bill. Whereas the northern states were completely against.

  • As a response to the fugitive slave act, a group of abolitionists formed the Underground Railroad, a network of "conductors" who would hide fugitive slaves and help them reach freedom in Canada
  • Race for Possession
  • Pick up the pace! We need to collect more settlers and get to the new territories before the southern states.
  • 800 armed men are sent to Lawrence to arrest all the citizens since they were against slavery. Along with arresting the citizens, the armed men ransacked the town. They also destroyed the town's newspaper printing press and the anti-slavery HQ.

  • John Brown, an abolitionist, captured 5 men from pro-slavery settlements, severed their hands and stabbed them to death. To Brown, the massacre was revenge since he was under the impression that 5 of his men were killed during the Sack of Lawrence.    
  • Settlers from both the north and south came to Kansas to make it either a slave state or a free state, depending on the majority vote of the people.
  • after Charles Sumner insulted Andrew Butler on his speech against slavery. Preston Brooks who was the nephew of Andrew Butler went up to Sumner and almost beat him to death with a cane. Some people praised Brook's actions because they hated Sumner's speech.
