  •  Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrenders his army to Union General Ulysses S. Grant ending the Civil War.
  • All officers and men were to be pardoned, and they would be sent home with their private property. Officers would keep their side arms and they were given rations.
  • Lee was unable to return to his estate in Arlington, Virginia. Lee and his family instead moved to Lexington, Virginia, where he became the president of Washington College.
