Yes they both looked shocked. This is because Myrtle was standing in the road thinking that the car was Tom’s and she was trying to get to him. Neither Gatsby or daisy knew who she was. But the only reason that Gatsby and Daisy are in the car together is because Tom said “ You two start on home... In Mr. Gatsby’s car” (Fitzgerald 135).
The sign has many different meanings, but the main symbol is that the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg are also the eyes of God. This is because when George is being asked about his wife, Myrtle, He looks over at the sign and says “God knows what you’ve been doing, everything you’ve been doing” (Fitzgerald 159). George says this because he then realizes about the affaire Myrtle had.
