  • There is a large hole in the wall and Fortunado tries to get in there, but can´t. There are two iron staples sticking out of the wall. One of them has a lock and the other has a chain. Shocked and intoxicated, Fortunado does not resist when Montresor chains him into the wall.
  • Montresor asks Fortunado one more time if he would like to go back and all Fortunado says is ¨the Amontillado. ¨Montresor goes over to a pile of mortar and picks up a trowel and starts to brick Fortunado into the wall. Fortunado is finally starting to sober up. Montresor realizes this when Fortunado lets out a low moaning cry. Fortunado gets silent then starts to rattle the chains, when the noise stops, the narrator begins to finish his job.  Once the seventh layer of bricks is completed, Montresor takes a break. He shines his light into the hole onto Fortunado, who screams in Montresors face. Montresor is frightened for a second, jumps back, pulls out his sword, and pokes it into the holes. Fortunado´s screams reached a new level and Montresor joined in. At midnight, Montresor completes three more layers of brick.

At midnight, Montresor completes three more layers of brick. On the eleventh, and last layer, only one brick remains before Fortunado is bricked in forever. Just as Montresor puts in the last brick, he hears a low laugh that makes the hair on the back of his neck stand up. Then he hears a low laugh that no longer sounds like Fortunado. Fortunado and Montresor make small talk and then finally when Montresor calls Fortunado´s name twice and does not get a response, Montresor shines his light into the small hole and hears nothing but jingle bells. Montresor is ready to be done so he puts in the last brick, covers it with plaster, and piles ¨the new masonry¨ with bones. ¨No mortal¨ has messed with Fortunado´s tomb for 50 years.
