  • 1. Phrases and clauses make up sentences and their structure. Without them, we would not have complete sentences. 2. Semicolons and colons combine or separate sentences. There are many grammatical ways to do so with these types of puncuation

  • Very good. Now I will tell you about dependent clauses and subordinating conjunctions. Dependent clauses have to be combined with an independent clause to be grammatically correct. Subordinating conjunctions are used to connect independent and dependent clauses.
  • For a ticket out the door, answer these last few questions.
  • 1. Write dialogue (5 sentences) where every sentence has a dependent and independent clause (switch order of clauses every sentence) 2. Explain how semicolons AND colons are used (with examples)

I did not need my umbrella because of the clear skies" "Since there was no rain, I think we are going to play outside" Semicolons link two or more independent clauses. For example: I have a big test tomorrow; I can't go out tonight. Colons can be used for the same reason as semicolons only when the second sentence expands on the first one. For example, He got what he worked for: he earned the promotion.
