Hester Prynne went, one day, to the mansion of Governor Bellingham, with a pair of gloves she had made for him.
Yet, there was a more important reason why Hester wanted to speak with the Governor, she wanted to find out if the rumors she had heard were true; are the town leaders going to take Pearl away from her?
Hester looks into the mirror and sees her scarlet letter, and sees how it's the most prominent feature of her appearance.
Hester notices Pearl's look of "naughty merriment" is also enhanced by the distorted mirror, giving Hester a reason to think that her daughter looks like an "imp".
Hester and Pearl moved to the garden, examining the scenery. And Pearl, acting like an imp; could not be pacified when crying for a red rose.
When finally, the Governor and clergymen were coming; coming to decide if Hester could keep Pearl.
