The boy is Jonas, the baby is Gabriel and the little girl who is talking lily. Jonas is holding the baby boy Gabriel who Lily spots out that they have the same eyes as each other, which is unusual. This shows the baby Gabriel and Jonas are special. "Jonas himself, and a female five whom he had noticed had the different, lighter eyes" (pg35). This shows that it is very rare to have different coloured eyes.
Hey your eyes look the same
This scene shows Jonas sees things that other people don't and this may or may not have to do with the colour of his eyes. "Following the path of the apple through the air with his eyes, that the piece of fruit - well this was the part that he couldn't adequately understand - the apple had changed (pg39)". This shows Jonas doesn't quite know why he is different but he is.
Hey, Ash does anything seem strange to you about the apple?
Yes, it jumps out of my hand to the ground
This scene is important as it shows that Jonas was confused at the way he had been selected in the job he had been assigned. Later on the job he had been assigned gave him the power to see things in the past. "Jonas has been selected to be our next receiver of memories. Then he heard the gasp in astonishment, by each of the seated citizens. He saw their faces widen in awe. And he did still not understand (pg82)." This shows the people were amazed he got this assignment but Jonas was still confused.
The Selected Job
This scene is very important because it shows the two types of memories the giver transmits to the receiver good and bad ones. The scene of Christmas/love is why he leaves the community to save Gabriel. He starts to receive colour from the giver. "The giver was gentle with him for many days following the terrible shared memory of war. There are so many good memories, the giver reminded Jonas. And it was true (pg156)." This shows Jonas was transmitted good memories and bad memories by the giver.
The importance of this scene shows the cold environment Jonas has to travel through to pass on the memories and the extent he has to do this to save Gabriel. This plan was made by Jonas and the receiver so that they could live a free life. "For a moment he taught how easy easy it would be to drop beside it himself, to let himself and Gabriel slide into the softness of snow =, the darkness of night, the warm comfort of sleep. But he has gone too for he must now go on. (pg220)." This shows how much pain he is going through for his love of Gabriel.
Escaping To Freedom
This is the final scene. The author lets the reader decide what the final scene is. I think it is that Jonas has passed the community border and has passed on to a new place of freedom where people will understand him and no what life is really like. "Suddenly he was aware with certainty and joy that below, ahead they were waiting for him (pg224)." This symbolises that Jonas could feel that he had passed a border into freedom.
