  • EXPOSITION
  • CONFLICT
  • RISING ACTION
  • June 27th was a clear, sunny morning in a small village with only about 300 residents.  But it wasn't just any day for them.  Crowds of people began to gather at the center of the village.  The little boys gathered small flat rocks and hid them in their pockets to get ready.  First, the children assembled in groups.  Next was the men, and last was the women.  They watched as the mayor, Mr. Summers, began to stir the papers in the black box for the lottery.
  • CLIMAX
  • The mayor called up the last names of each leader of the family, which was typically the men.  Every one of the reached into the black box and pulled out a white card.  Normally, you would want to win the lottery, but this was different.  If you were the man with a black dot on their paper, one of your family members was going to get stoned by the residents of the village.  Once they opened the paper, Bill Hutchinson had a black dot on his paper, and he was devestated.
  • FALLING ACTION
  • After Bill was picked, each family member had to come to the black basket and pick a paper to see who was going to get stoned, including Bill Jr, Bill, Little Davey, Tessie, and Racheal.  All of them were frightened, as they did not want any of of their loved ones to die.  Then, Mr.Summers announced that they should open up their papers.  It was not Bill or Bill Jr, nor was it Racheal or Little Davey.  That meant the only person who could have it was Tessie, the mother.
  • RESOLUTION
  • Tessie opened her card, assuming it was her.  Sure enough, there was a large black dot on her paper.  All of her children were terrified of what was going to happen to their mother, and so was Bill. Mr. Summers announced that Tessie had the black dot and would be the member of the family who was going to get stoned.
  • After the announcement, the town's members began to stuff their pockets with flat rocks, just right for throwing.  All women and men, no matter how big or small, had rocks and were ready to throw them at Tessie.  Meanwhile, Tessie was very scared of what was going to happen to her, and had to prepare herself.
  • Once everyone had rocks, they began to throw them directly at Tessie.  Many rocks were hitting her.  More and more people started to crowd around her, and more rocks were getting thrown.  Eventually one hit her in the head.  All the residents of the village crowded around her.  They found her laying on the ground, dead.
