Ellen Gabriel was born in 1959 in Kanesatake Canada . Her Mohawk name is Katsitsakwas.

Ellen Gabriel faught hard to protect the rights of her territory while also protecting sovereignty.
During the 1990 Oka crisis, she was chosen by the People of the Longhouse and her community to be their Spokeperson.
The town of Oka wants to build a golf course on this land!
But this is our land! We do not want you to be building a golf course!
The native warriors blocked major bridges and set up barricades to prevent the development of the golf course. The army also set up traps to prevent the First Nations from leaving.
For the past 22 years, she has been a Indigenous Human Rights advocate. She has also worked as a President of Quebec Native Women's association.
Ellen Gabriel was a determined lady with a strong personality. She stood up for the rights of Indigenous peoples and she continued to make her voice heard. She is very brave and strong. She is definitely a leader for her community.
