Will the King give me a charter of land to help our people?
Sure. It will be called The Charter of 1732.
Can you help us build our colony?
James Oglethorpe was a wealthy member of England's Parliament. He didn't like the way poor were treated and in 1720 began talking about creating the colony to help the poor and unemployed.
He can't understand me. How will the colony work?
My name's Mary Musgrove. I can be your translator.
In 1730 Oglethorpe asked King George ll for a charter of land in America. the colony would be called Georgia in honor of the King. King George agreed as the colony would be a buffer colony
Ask him if we can buid our coloy here.
Mr. Oglethorpe asked if he can build his colony here.
Sure he can.
Oglethorpe took 35 families with him when the Anne set sail on November 17, 1732. he selected a high bluff an said that the new city would be called Savannah. Oglethorpe met chief Tomochichi and wanted to negotiate fairly with him for the success of the new colony.
Drop it right there boys.
Unfortunately neither could understand one another. However by a rare stroke of luck Oglethorpe met Mary Musgrove who was a part-Indian woman who could understand both languages and offered to be his translator.
Her contributions were critical to the founding of the colony as she helped Oglethorpe and Tomochichi resolve their issues peacefully.
In February 1733 Oglethorpe and the colonists cleared land for the city of Savanah. They hoped that it would be a "classless society", where houses were similar, land holdings were restricted, and slavery was forbidden.
