Storyboard Text

  • Isn't it obvious? Risks are when we give up or put in jeopardy something valuable to us. This can be physical or conceptual.
  • What are risks anyway?
  • RISKS Why and When People Take Them
  • By Elaina Piccicuto!
  • Shhhhh!
  • In the past; people would take risks to satisfy material needs such as wealth/opportunity or hunger or shelter.
  • People have been taking risks all throughout history. The possibility of reward has often outweighed the possibility of any moral peril that could afflict us in the process of a risky action.
  • You get the idea. In current times, we risk material needs as well as non-material! This makes modern life riskier, despite other physical threats such as disease or hunger being less concerning.
  • In current times, people take risks all the time on social media (risking reputation or confrontation), investing in stocks, gambling, putting personal info out into the world, eating foods with questionable amounts of preservatives, driving to work everyday no matter the weather, skipping appointments and bills-
  • Risk of safety
  • Financial Risks
  • So you may think: Why is this important to talk about? The answer: It connects to our lives in more ways than you can count.
  • Risking of Power
  • Risk of  possesions
  • Social Risks
  • This can be connected to Columbine.
  • Risk of safety was also involved, but in the case of the Columbine shooters, intentional and possibly desired.
  • Social Risk: Eric and Dylan committed mass murder, knowing that if they survived,  they would face hatred from the public and their loved ones.  They presumably decided it was worth the risk since they felt they had nothing left to lose.
  • When they feel desperate or trapped
  • To review, why and when do people take risks?
  • When the potential gain outweighs the cost.
  • Because they desire something more than they fear potential consequences
