  • Biology Class
  • Today, we will talk about Gregor Mendel's Second Experiment.
  • Biology Class
  • What exactly happened in this experiment?
  • Mendel's Second Experiment
  • How many traits did he experiment with the pea plants in this experiment?
  • Biology Class
  • Genotypes and phenotypes are also an important factor in this experiment.
  • The monk Gregor Mendel's second experiment, also known as the "principle of dominance", states that some alleles are dominant (meaning the most influential trait or gene) and other alleles are recessive (meaning the undergoing trait or gene).

  • Mendel's Second Experiment
  • In this experiment, Mendel investigated two characteristics and resulted in a dihybrid cross. This led to independent assortment. Just like in the first experiment, there's a P, F1, and F2 phase. The P phase crossed yellow round seeds and green wrinkled seeds. As a result of this phase, the F1 phase is homozygous with all yellow and round seeds. The F1 offspring resulted in all possible combinations (heterozygous).

  • Biology
  • Genotypes are the genetic makeup of an organism. Your genotype determines your phenotype. Phenotypes are physical characteristics of an organism. If your genotypes and phenotypes are alike, they are homozygous. If they are not the same, they are heterozygous.
  • Dismissal
  • What a good lesson in Mendel's second experiment!
  • To cross is to breed or mix. It is the process in which homologous chromosomes exchange portions of their chromatids during meiosis. Crossing happened with the pea plants in Mendel's experiments. In his second experiment, Mendel's plants made a dihybrid cross, meaning he crossed two characteristics in the pea plants.
  • What does it mean to cross?

  • Learning about his experiments makes me wanna conduct my own!
