Nettie runs away from Alfonso and stays with Celie and Mr.___ Mr.___ is still infatuated with Nettie, but she rejects his compliments and advances. Eventually, he kicks Nettie out of the house.
Celie sees a young girl in a fabric store. She is sure she is her daughter. She learns that the little girl was adopted by the minister and his wife, Corinne, and is named Olivia.
Mr.____'s sisters come to visit. They compliment Celie on being a great mother and her cleaning. Kate insists that they go shopping and Mr.____ reluctantly allows Celie to buy a dress. As Kate is leaving, she tells Celie she has to fight back, but Celie really does not see a point.
Mr.___ brings home his ill mistress. Celie admires Shug Avery, and even though she is rude to Celie at first, Celie helps nurse her back to health and they begin to form a friendship.
