Storyboard Text

  • The Indian Removal Act was a law that President Jackson wanted to enforce in order to get rich land for cotton farms. However, the Natives living in that land would be forced to leave their land.
  • Chief Justice John Marshall stated that forcing the Natives off their land is unconstitutional. He said that the states had no right to force them out.
  • No way you're kicking them out Jackson!
  • Pfft! Whatever, watch me!
  • We shall not step off our land unless they make us!
  • The Native Americans only had 2 years to evacuate their land before Jackson would take action against them. However, the Natives waited until the very last minute to leave.
  • Soon enough, Jackson used military force on the Indians. They carried what they could and journeyed onto their new territory.
  • Let's get a move on Indians!
  • Throughout the entire journey, an estimated total of 16,000 Cherokees died along the way due to age and the coldness of winter.
  • This event is now known as "The Trail of Tears." This event provided more land for cotton farms, however Jackson forced the natives out, in which was already declared unconstitutional
