The Indian Removal Act was a law that President Jackson wanted to enforce in order to get rich land for cotton farms. However, the Natives living in that land would be forced to leave their land.
Chief Justice John Marshall stated that forcing the Natives off their land is unconstitutional. He said that the states had no right to force them out.
No way you're kicking them out Jackson!
Pfft! Whatever, watch me!
We shall not step off our land unless they make us!
The Native Americans only had 2 years to evacuate their land before Jackson would take action against them. However, the Natives waited until the very last minute to leave.
Soon enough, Jackson used military force on the Indians. They carried what they could and journeyed onto their new territory.
Let's get a move on Indians!
Throughout the entire journey, an estimated total of 16,000 Cherokees died along the way due to age and the coldness of winter.
This event is now known as "The Trail of Tears." This event provided more land for cotton farms, however Jackson forced the natives out, in which was already declared unconstitutional
